Career Tips for the Young Person

If you are in your last couple of years of your education, this is the time to start thinking about a career, as you prepare to experience the adult world. Your choice of career is one of the most important decisions in your life, get it wrong and you could waste a lot of time and resources.

Here are a few tips to help make sure that you consider everything when thinking about a career.

  • Aim High – Now is not the time to undervalue yourself and if you have an interest in something, you should pursue it, even if you think it is above your station. If, for example, you fancy becoming an airline pilot, find out what core subjects you need and chart a path to entering university.
  • Create a Shortlist – If you throw all of your energy into a single profession and you don’t make the grade, this will derail you; rather choose three careers, on order of preference and find out as much as you can about each career. Many people found happiness and success from their second or third choice of profession and the Internet is full of free information that can help you to select a few professions.
  • Taking the Right Courses – Once you have a career in mind, you need to find out what degree would be ideal, then you can make enquiries with the best colleges and universities. If, for example, you are in Year 11, this is not too early to be looking at college and university courses; your career counsellor can help with this, which is why they are there.
  • Get Good Grades – It is important to do well in your examinations, a high GPA will help you to gain entrance to the university of your choosing. If you are weak in any subject, book some private tuition with a one-on-one tutor to improve your core understanding of the subject and that will ensure you get good scores. Studying an international course (known as เรียนอินเตอร์ in Thai) benefits you in so many ways.
  • Think About the Future – It is pointless getting into a dying industry, so whatever you choose, make sure the sector has a future. You could get in at the ground floor level in a new and innovative sector such as machine learning or robotics, both of which have a great future.
  • Present yourself Well – Once you start contacting colleges and universities, it is important to be professional in the way you present yourself. In a short time, you will be contacting potential employers and your resume should be informative, well-laid out and giving the right information.

The more effort you put into your research, the easier it will be to navigate your way to success and with lots of planning and determination, your career path will be set.
